Nohemi Terry’s Story to Success
Nohemi Terry is the creator of Creations by Mimi. Nohemi, better known as Mimi, created her own business in July 2019.
Mimi was a single mom who moved to the states to become successful for her kid. She graduated from Escuela de Artes y Oficios los Infante en San Luis Potosi, Mexico. She graduated with an emphasis in Fashion Design. Her passion for decorating stemmed from decorating for her son every year. She picked themes and made her son’s birthday as extravagant as possible while decorating for every holiday. She also worked in a bakery when she came to Texas and enjoyed decorating desserts as well. She also worked at Secret Floral Garden, where she set up, decorated, and created for all kinds of parties.
Due to Covid, Mimi lost her job. She needed to provide for herself and her family, so she created opportunities for herself. She thought about making floral arrangements, being a seamstress, and balloons decorations as a new source of income. What made her choose balloons and not the other paths was being a part of people’s special moments.
“It makes her feel happy. I like to make people happy and see their faces once they see my balloons. It’s not just balloons; it’s art. And balloons are for EVERYBODY, men, women, kids, adults.”
She didn’t think about the risks. “I feel so confident about myself that I know I can do it.” So once she set her mind to it, she looked at social media and kept tabs to see how exactly balloons could become a business. Drive-by parties were a big thing, so she hopped on the train and started her journey of creating a business.
She started with doing events for family and friends and charging small amounts just for materials until she began to elevate her skills, knowledge, and equipment. Once things started to fall in line, she began to charge more and genuinely create a business.
She sought out higher knowledge in her field. So, Mimi enrolled in online and in-person balloon classes. In 2020, Mimi attended three classes about balloon creations and techniques and three more in 2021.
Her biggest support, help, and inspiration is her son Carlos, and Carlos picks up the slack when Mimi needs help. Creations by Mimi also couldn’t have “hit the road” without her husband Sanoi driving her everywhere she needs to be.
Mimi credits all of her success to her support and her dedication. Her words of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere:” Just do it. Business is for everyone. If you like it, then just do it! Then you can become an entrepreneur like me!”
